US Navy method. Take measurements relaxed at end of an exhale. Accurate to ±3 % vs DEXA for most people.
About Body Fat %
A body-fat calculator estimates body-fat percentage from circumference measurements (US Navy method) or skinfold readings (Jackson-Pollock). It's an estimate — DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing are accurate, but pricey; tape measurements give you a working number for free.
Frequently asked questions
±3-5% for typical adults. Best used for tracking change over time, not the absolute number.
Men: 8-19% (athletic) to 18-24% (average) to 25%+ (over-fat). Women: 14-25% (athletic) to 23-30% (average) to 31%+ (over-fat).
Navy method: neck (just below larynx), waist (at navel), hips (widest, women only). Stand relaxed, tape level, no pulling tight.
DEXA scan (gold standard, $50-150). BodPod and hydrostatic weighing are close. At-home smart scales are roughly as accurate as Navy tape — sometimes worse.
