About Geocoder
What is geocoding?
Geocoding is the process of turning a postal address (1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC) or a place name (Eiffel Tower) into a pair of numbers — latitude and longitude — that pinpoint that location on Earth.
Toolenza's geocoder is powered by OpenStreetMap Nominatim, the same open-data project that backs much of the open-source mapping ecosystem. Results are cached server-side, so popular places resolve instantly.
When to use it
- Plotting points on a custom map
- Calculating distances between addresses
- Generating share-links for meeting locations
- Bulk converting a list of addresses (one at a time, please — Nominatim is a free service)
Frequently asked questions
We cache resolved results server-side for 7 days to avoid hammering the upstream OpenStreetMap service, but we do not associate them with you unless you explicitly save a place to your account.
Nominatim relies on OpenStreetMap data. Try a more complete address (street, city, country), or switch to a nearby landmark.
Yes — please keep it to roughly one request per second. Bulk-geocoding hundreds of addresses requires a paid provider.
