About PDF to Excel
What this actually does
A PDF does not contain a spreadsheet. It contains glyphs at coordinates. So no tool — free or paid — can recover a table that was never stored; every one of them is guessing at structure from the way the text is laid out. This tool is honest about that.
It reads your PDF's text layer, gives each page its own worksheet, turns each line into a row, and splits that row into columns wherever the line contains a tab or two or more consecutive spaces — which is how most PDF generators separate cells when the grid lines aren't stored as text.
When you'll be happy with the result
- Reports, statements, invoices, and exports where the columns are visually aligned.
- Anything originally generated from a spreadsheet or a database report.
- Cases where you mainly want the data, and expect to tidy the columns yourself.
When you won't
- Scanned PDFs. There is no text layer to read, so you get empty sheets. Run our Image to Text (OCR) tool first.
- Merged cells, multi-line cells, and nested headers. These flatten.
- Prose. Paragraphs with no column gaps land in column A, one line per row.
Treat the output as a starting point you clean up in Excel, not a finished workbook.
What we do with your file
The PDF is uploaded, parsed in memory, and the temporary copy is deleted before the download is sent. Nothing is stored, indexed, or kept.
Frequently asked questions
Often, but not always. Columns are inferred from the spacing in the PDF's text layer. Cleanly aligned tables usually survive; merged cells, wrapped cell text, and nested headers do not. Check the result before relying on it.
Your PDF is almost certainly a scan — an image of a page, with no text layer to extract. Run it through our Image to Text (OCR) tool first, then paste the text into a spreadsheet.
Yes — spreadsheet generation needs a server. The upload is parsed in memory and the temporary file is deleted before your download starts. We never keep a copy.
Yes, 20 MB. The whole text layer is held in memory while the workbook is built, so larger files are rejected rather than risked.
Unlock it first with our Unlock PDF tool (you need the password), then convert.
