PDF to TXT
Extract plain text from a PDF (browser-only)
Runs entirely in your browser via pdf.js. Nothing is uploaded.
Only extracts embedded text — scanned image-only PDFs need OCR (try Image to Text (OCR)).
About PDF to TXT
Extract the text from any PDF, without uploading it
Sometimes you don't need a Word document — you just need the raw text: to paste into a note, search across dozens of contracts, feed to a script, or index for a personal search tool. This extractor uses Mozilla's pdf.js library, entirely in your browser, to pull the text layer out of a PDF page by page.
Because it runs client-side, your PDF is never uploaded anywhere. That matters for legal briefs, medical records, financial reports, HR documents — anything you would think twice about handing to a third-party website.
What you get
- All embedded text, concatenated across pages.
- Each page is separated by
--- Page N ---markers so you can navigate a long document. - Copy to clipboard with one click, or download as a
.txtfile.
When this tool works — and when it doesn't
It works on any PDF that has a real text layer, which is the vast majority of PDFs generated by Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, InDesign, Chrome print-to-PDF, and so on.
It does not work on scanned PDFs (photos of paper saved as PDF) because there is no text to extract — only images of text. For those, use our Image to Text (OCR) tool to run Tesseract OCR on each page.
Frequently asked questions
No. The entire extraction runs in your browser via pdf.js. Your PDF never leaves your device.
Scanned PDFs contain images of text, not real text — so this tool returns empty or garbled output. Use our Image to Text (OCR) tool instead: it runs Tesseract on the page images to recover the text.
Whatever the PDF stores in its text layer is what you get. Headers and footers appear on every page. If they get in the way, use find-and-replace in your editor after export.
Limited by your browser memory. In practice 500-page technical PDFs process in a few seconds; very large books (2,000+ pages) may take 30+ seconds. There is no server-side limit because there is no server involved.
