About PDF to Word

Turn a PDF back into an editable Word document

PDFs are a display format — they're intentionally hard to edit. This tool runs your PDF through LibreOffice on our server (the same open-source engine that powers a good chunk of the world's document conversion) and hands you back an editable .docx you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages, or LibreOffice Writer itself.

Unlike browser-only converters that ship a lightweight approximation, LibreOffice preserves paragraph flow, headings, tables, bullet lists, images, and most inline formatting. Complex two-column layouts, forms, and hand-scanned pages still convert but may need a manual pass — which is normal for every PDF-to-Word tool, no matter how expensive.

What we do with your file

  • Uploaded to a temporary directory on our server.
  • Converted by LibreOffice in headless mode (--convert-to docx).
  • Both the input PDF and output DOCX are deleted after 1 hour by a scheduled cleanup job.
  • No copies are kept; no scanning; no OCR pipeline.

Free-tier limits

  • 3 conversions per day per IP (resets at UTC midnight).
  • 20 MB max file size per upload.
  • Longer runs (large or complex PDFs) may take 10-30 seconds — the progress indicator on-screen tells you when it's ready.

Pro users get unlimited daily conversions and priority queue placement.

Frequently asked questions

For text-heavy PDFs (reports, ebooks, contracts, articles), yes — LibreOffice reproduces paragraphs, headings, tables, and lists almost perfectly. For complex marketing PDFs with overlapping graphics and custom fonts, expect to touch up a few positioning details after opening in Word.

Both the uploaded PDF and the resulting .docx are automatically deleted after 1 hour by a scheduled cleanup job. We do not scan, index, or archive user files.

You will see a "429 — daily limit reached" message. The counter resets at 00:00 UTC. Upgrade to Pro for unlimited conversions and priority processing.

LibreOffice will produce a .docx that embeds the scanned pages as images — but the text will not be selectable/editable because no OCR is run. For scanned PDFs, use our Image to Text (OCR) tool first to get the text, then paste it into Word.

Editable-quality PDF-to-DOCX conversion is a hard problem that today requires a full document engine (LibreOffice, Word, Acrobat). Browser-only libraries produce a rough approximation at best. We chose LibreOffice for fidelity — at the cost of a server round-trip.
