About Sharia Inheritance

The Sharia inheritance system (Ilm al-Faraid / Mawarith) is one of the most precise legal frameworks in classical jurisprudence: Qur'anic verses (an-Nisa 11, 12, 176) fix specific fractions of an estate for named heirs — spouse, parents, children, siblings — and any residue passes to the asaba (male-line residuary heirs) after those fixed shares are paid.

What this tool does

This calculator implements the standard fixed-share (fard) rules for the most common inheritance cases: spouse alive or not, sons and daughters (children double the daughter's share when a son is present), father and mother, and full brothers/sisters as residuaries when there is no son or father. It shows each heir's fraction, the working, and the residual distribution.

Important limitations

This is a general-case teaching calculator. It does not handle every edge case (awl proportional reduction when shares exceed 1, radd redistribution when shares fall short with no residuary, agnate grandfathers, uterine siblings, hajb exclusion chains, or the specific rulings of the different Sunni/Ja'fari schools). Real estate distribution — especially involving debts, funeral costs, wills of up to one-third, and disputed heirs — must always be reviewed by a qualified mufti or Sharia court.

Frequently asked questions

`Ilm al-Mawarith` (or `al-Faraid`) is the Islamic science of inheritance — the fixed fractional shares of an estate assigned to named heirs after debts, funeral costs, and any bequests (up to one third) are paid.

No. It is an educational tool showing standard-case fixed shares. Actual inheritance is a legal matter — consult a qualified Sharia scholar or Islamic court for any real estate.

The Qur'an (an-Nisa 11) sets a 2:1 ratio for sons vs daughters when both are present. Classical jurisprudence explains this in the context of the son's obligation to financially support his family, wife, and unmarried sisters — women's inheritance is entirely their own.

Complex `awl` and `radd` adjustments, agnate grandfathers, uterine siblings, exclusion (`hajb`) chains beyond the standard cases, non-Muslim heirs, and school-specific rulings (Ja'fari differs from the four Sunni schools). Use it as a teaching tool only.
